In Masahiro Sakurai’s latest Famitsu Column, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director talked about being excited about the prospect of showing what’s next for the game. During the “Mr. Sakurai Presents” videos, you can really tell that Sakurai puts his heart and soul into these reveals.
“Being able to take part in this many different types of content truly makes me feel like I have a job filled with happiness, and I’m looking forward to what we get to show you next,” stated Sakurai.
Of course, Sakurai asserts that it’s been difficult to do these presentations and character breakdowns. There are various circumstances that are to thank for these presented challenges.
“The trailer was also something we worked hard on,” said Sakurai. “Seeing the fantastic response to it, it truly resonated that no matter how much difficulty we had in finishing it. It was worth it.”
“Recording the ‘How to use Steve and Alex’ video was very challenging as well,” continued Sakurai. “There are so many things to think about, including all the things that went wrong. The experience is firmly imprinted in my memory.”

Sakurai continued to assert how the COVID-19 global pandemic has caused problems for development. Previously, Sakurai mentioned how team members are working from their homes to get the remaining DLC finished. Despite the circumstances, Sakurai has promised that they will deliver on the content for Fighters Pass Vol. 2 and create exciting trailers to showcase the newest characters.
“Also, something I’ve already said quite a few times here in the magazine columns, but the coronavirus pandemic is affecting all aspects of game development and making our work much harder than it normally has been,” noted Sakurai.
The Fighters Pass Vol. 2 was originally expected to be completed before December 31, 2021, but plans could’ve changed with the novel coronavirus outbreak. Once the challengers for the pass are released, the development that’s gone on since Super Smash Bros. 4 is expected to end.
The wait between Byleth and Min Min’s reveal ended up being 158 days. Following Min Min’s announcement, Steve was announced 101 days later.
One can certainly expect the developers to become a little more efficient at working from home as time goes on. Masahiro Sakurai mentioned how he was looking forward to the next reveal. Is this next announcement expected to come around 100 days after Steve’s reveal or could the unveiling of the next character come sooner than expected?
A special thanks goes out to Nicholas ‘MajinTenshinhan’ Taylor for his contributions and translations used in this article.
